The half-size master cone that nobody sells in a box

Master cone loose at length, but the next size down binds two millimetres short? The Intermedium® gauge is a calibrating ruler for gutta-percha points: it tells you whether the cone in your fingers is genuinely the size on the box, and it lets you cut an intermediate one when the case falls between sizes – a 25 becomes a 27.5, and the tug-back problem goes away.

› Three outcomes when you check a cone – the tip reaches the front face evenly and the cone is true; it stops short and the cone is oversized; or it passes straight through, and the excess is trimmed with a new blade.
› Larger sizes – Angelus notes that 60, 70 and 80 need two continuous cuts to reach the intermediate size.
› Two cautions – use a new scalpel blade each time, and keep radiographic chemicals off the ruler, as they can stain it.

Why would I need an intermediate size?
Because canals do not read the ISO chart. When the master cone is a fraction loose and the next size will not seat, cutting a half size gives you tug-back without over-preparing the canal to fit the point.

Which points does it work with?
Standardised gutta-percha points, calibrated against the perforations in the plate – including assorted RECIPROC® points and RECIPROC® blue R25.

Does it wear out?
It is a reusable instrument, not a consumable – clean with a neutral detergent and a non-abrasive sponge, never steel wool, then sterilise. Pair it with your sealer of choice, such as MTA Fillapex®.
