MONOSTERYL® Flame · 012XF · 10
Sterile, ready to useSingle useIndividually wrapped
MDT’s flame diamond, ISO shape 249, size 012 (1.2 mm), extra fine grit with a yellow ring, on a 21 mm FG long shank. MONOSTERYL® is how MDT pack it: the same bur as their standard range, each one individually wrapped on a roll and gamma-sterilised, so it goes from the wrapper to the handpiece with nothing to clean or autoclave first. This is the 249, the long flame; the 247 in the same size and grit has a 4 mm head on a 19 mm shank.

Open the wrapper, fit the bur, use it, bin it. It arrives sterile, so there is no cleaning, bagging or autoclave cycle, and no used burs waiting to be reprocessed. Every bur you pick up is a new one.
MDT’s catalogue sets their burs at 60% diamond exposure against 40% for others. MDT list the features as "stronger bonding", "larger exposure of each diamond crystal" and "uniform diamond coating, including the tips", and the benefits as "faster & cooler cutting/grinding" and "slower clogging due to higher exposure of diamonds".
› The head is a long flame – a head that swells, then tapers to a fine point, 8.0 mm long, diamond-coated over hardened stainless steel – MDT make each bur from a single piece.
› MDT say their “Triton” coating process "more than doubles the strength of the diamond bonding to the tool", on "Swiss-made heat treated and ground Stainless Steel shanks".
› MDT’s instructions list diamond burs for restorative work generally, "including but not limited to: removal of caries or old restorations, preparation of cavities for restoration, finishing of restorations, preparation of crowns".
› Speed, from MDT’s instructions for a 1.2 mm head: 70,000–220,000 rpm recommended, never more than 450,000 rpm.
› Keep the bur moving and do not press hard – MDT warn that excessive pressure and a stationary bur both generate heat.
Same size (012), same extra fine grit, same flame shape. MDT’s catalogue gives the 249 an 8.0 mm head on a long 21 mm shank and the 247 a 4.0 mm head on a standard 19 mm shank. The difference is the head length and the overall length.
No. MONOSTERYL® is MDT’s packing, not a different bur. MDT pack sterile burs in a dedicated cleanroom and sterilise them by gamma irradiation; use them by the expiry date printed on the pack.
No. MDT label sterile burs single use and state they "should NOT be reused or re-processed". Once used, it is discarded.
