Two Class II cavities side by side, and one separation ring on the tray. The starter kit ships with a single ring, which is fine until the day it is not. This refill set adds two more, plus four pairs of tines across all three sizes – including the large pair the starter kit does not include.

› A ring that spreads can be reset. The SwissMat forceps carry notches for exactly that, so a tired ring is a fixable problem rather than a replacement.
› Secure it with floss. PD's warning says to ensure the ring with dental floss, alongside the mandatory rubber dam.
› Seat it over the wedge, as far gingivally as it will go, once the band and wedge are already in place.

How much separation force does the ring apply?
PD publish no figure, so we will not quote one – and we would be sceptical of anyone who did without a method to go with it. What they do state is the intent: strong tooth separation to create the contact point.

Which tine size do I use?
The one that matches the tooth. They are interchangeable and autoclavable, so changing them mid-list is a few seconds rather than a second ring.
