For the margin that has gone further gingivally than you hoped

Caries removed, and the box floor is now well below the cemento-enamel junction. A standard band leaves you with nothing to seal against down there. This is the same 6.4 mm molar band with a gingival extension, so there is metal where the margin actually is rather than where you would have liked it to be.

› Wedging matters more here. A deeper margin gives the wedge more work to do, and PD's V-wedges are shaped to compress rather than to shove the papilla out of the way.
› Concave edge to the occlusal, as with every band in the range.
› Keep both on the shelf. You will not know which you need until the caries is out.

What exactly does the extension do?
It gives additional band below the standard gingival edge, for margins that sit deeper. PD publish no dimension for it, so we will not invent one – the practical answer is that it covers what a plain band leaves open.

Should this be my default molar band?
No. Use the plain band where the margin is normal; the extension is for the cases where it is not. The 50-piece pack is sized on that assumption.
