Calcified canalsInitial instrumentationSterile blister
Dentsply Sirona UK: “pre-sterilised C+ Files for calcified canal penetration”. They list the C+ as “Ideal Files for the initial instrumentation of root canals”, with “Stronger buckling resistance compared to K-Files, which provides easier location of the canal orifices”.
This pack: ReadySteel® C+ File, Size 08, 21 mm (Pack of 6)
Dentsply Sirona · ReadySteel® range, made by Dentsply Maillefer
| Size | ISO 08 · 0.08 mm at the tip |
| Length | 21 mm |
| Cross-section | Square |
| Taper | .04 over the first 4 mm from the tip, .02 along the rest of the shaft (Kwak et al. 2014, measured on the size 15; see below) |
| Pack | 6 files, pre-sterilised blister |
› Pyramid tip, square section. Dentsply Sirona UK: “Pyramid shaped tip makes insertion easier during instrumentation and the square section allows better resistance to distortion”
› Feel. “Better negotiation of calcifications and a better tactile feel”
› Depth gauge. “Depth gauge makes it easier to determine working length when working with X-rays”
› Buckling, size for size. Dentsply Maillefer's C+ Files leaflet charts buckling force against K-Files at each size: at ISO 08 the C+ File took 47% more load before it buckled. Manufacturer's own test data; the method is not published.
› Polished. “Polished surface of the C+ File allows for better removal of debris as well as smoother insertion”
In the laboratory study Dentsply Sirona cite for buckling (Kwak et al., Restorative Dentistry & Endodontics 2014), four size 15, 25 mm files were compared, and “The CP was shown to require the highest load to buckle and bend the files, and the NT showed the least.” (CP is the C+ File.) The study tested size 15 only. The same paper is the published source for the taper: under the stereomicroscope the size 15 C+ File measured a 4% taper over the 4 mm from the tip and 2% along the rest of the shaft, against the .02 of a standard K-File, and its square section gave it the largest cross-sectional area of the four files. Dentsply Maillefer describe it simply as a “unique taper for ultra-stiff design”.
C+ File or C-PILOT?
Both are stainless steel files for calcified canals. Dentsply Sirona describe the C+ by its pyramid tip and square section, as above; VDW describe C-PILOT “For probing in calcified root canals”, with “The inactive pilot tip conducts the instrument safely along the canal”. We stock both, and the choice is yours.
Which lengths?
We stock the C+ File in 18, 21 and 25 mm, in sizes 08, 10 and 15.
