FX by hand, for larger and straighter canals – named as a manual option in Dentsply Sirona’s own procedure

The ProTaper Ultimate™ FX, without the motor. Dentsply Sirona make every file in the range in a hand version, and their Fact File is plain about what changes: “A dedicated Hand-Use version is available for all ProTaper Ultimate™ files with the same technical features as the rotary ones.” This is the 21 mm version – the same file on the shortest shaft, for short teeth or where opening is limited.

›  Same file, same place in the sequence. Slider, Shaper, then F1 to F3 as the canal gauges; FX and FXL for larger, straighter canals.
›  Matched obturation still applies. Dentsply Sirona match paper points and cones to the colour and size of the last file used – by hand or by motor.
›  Discard on deformation. Their procedure: inspect the flutes on removal, and discard any file showing unwinding, straightening or stretching.

Questions we get asked

How do I use the hand version?
Follow the instructions for use supplied with the hand files. The Dentsply Sirona literature we hold sets out the motor-driven technique, so we will not describe a manual one in its place – ask us if you would like the IFU chased.

Can I mix hand and rotary in one case?
Dentsply Sirona’s larger-canal sequence names FX and FXL as either mechanically driven or manual, and their Fact File gives the hand files the same technical features. Beyond that, follow the IFU.
