Why 12.5 and 17.5?
VDW make two intermediate K-File sizes, 12.5 and 17.5, in 21 and 25 mm, to split the step from 10 to 15 and from 15 to 20.

Do I need to sterilise them before first use?
No. VDW: “No sterilisation prior to first use”
