The Root ZX mini is compact, lightweight and designed to fit the hand – Morita suggest it sits on a tray, the patient’s apron or anywhere convenient. Inside is the same proven Root ZX ratio technique, with no calibration or zero adjustment before each canal.

Reading the display

“The meter’s 0.5 reading indicates that the file tip is located very near the physiological apical foramen. Use this to determine the working length depending on the individual case. The exact working length depends on the shape and condition of the canal, and a clinical judgement must be made by the dentist.”

The evidence behind the name

The Root ZX is the benchmark apex locator – when a new locator comes to market, the Root ZX is the one it is usually compared with. The mini puts the same method in a hand-sized unit.

Morita state the Root ZX technology has been independently evaluated at a 97.5% accuracy rate. The study they cite for it in their Root ZX3 literature is Guise, Goodell & Imamura, Journal of Endodontics 2010;36(2):279-81, an in vitro comparison tested with the Root ZX II – a figure for the technology, not a clinical result for this unit.

Which Root ZX?

Before you use it

Morita’s instructions state the unit must not be used on a patient fitted with a pacemaker or ICD, and set out further precautions. File holders and contrary electrodes are autoclavable at no more than 135 °C. Check it weekly with the test plug: it plugs into the probe cord jack and the meter should read within 3 bars of the “1” mark.

Frequently asked questions

How long do the batteries last?

Morita’s instructions give about 70 hours of use from three AAA alkaline cells – six to twelve months at a normal rate.

Does it need a different probe cord from the bigger units?

Yes – the Root ZX mini probe cord has an angled plug made for the mini’s curved body.

Mini or Root ZX3?

Both use Morita’s Root ZX method. The Root ZX3 is the current desktop generation with a 40-bar real-time display; the mini is the one to choose where space, or carrying it between surgeries, matters.
