Canal Detector is Cerkamed's methylene blue dye for the pulp floor. Their description: "Blue dye contained in the product penetrates into root canal orifices turning them blue and making it easier to find the main root canal orifices and location of any cracks." A 2 ml syringe with brush applicators, so it goes on as a film rather than a flood.

What it is for

›  Cerkamed: "Remove dentine where the root canal orifices are expected, insert 1-3 drops of preparation on the bottom of the tooth cavity, wait 5-10 seconds, then rinse and dry the tooth cavity. The points coloured intense blue indicate the root canal orifices."

›  After use, Cerkamed: withdraw the piston to stop the preparation overflowing, unscrew the applicator, and screw the white plug back on.

›  Cerkamed direct that the applicator is dipped in ethyl alcohol before it is fitted, and that it is single use – "Multiple use of applicator may cause the risk of reinfection."

›  Cerkamed mark the product "TO BE USED BY DENTIST ONLY".

Where does it earn its place?

On the calcified floor of a molar chamber where the fourth canal is not showing, and on a suspected crack line. It does not open a canal – that is still the C-PILOT ISO 010, 25 mm – it tells you where to put it.

Will it stain the tooth?

Cerkamed direct a rinse and dry after 5–10 seconds, and their description is of a dye that penetrates the orifice and a crack rather than the dentine surface. They make no claim either way about lasting stain, so neither do we.
