The kit that keeps the heater bore clear

An Obtura that has not been cleaned is an Obtura with hardened gutta percha in the heater bore, a stiff plunger and a seal on its way out. Obtura Spartan ask for the chamber to be cleaned daily, and after every use for best results – and note that failing to clean the instrument to the manual can void the warranty. This is the kit the manual is written around.

This pack: Obtura Cleaning Kit · one bottle of gutta percha solvent and 2 cleaning brushes · for the Obtura II and the Obtura III Max

Where it fits in the routine

With the unit off, cooled and unplugged: take the thermal protector off with the Multi-Tool, unscrew the needle nut, dispose of the needle, then squeeze out whatever gutta percha is left – it comes out as a solid pellet. Pull the plunger shaft, and if there is gutta percha on the seal or inside the handpiece shaft, coat a brush in the solvent and work it back and forth until it is clear. Reassemble in reverse.

›  Never submerge any part of the handpiece in the solvent. Obtura Spartan put that in capitals, twice.

›  Never spray solution onto the unit. It goes on a cloth first.

Safety – it is a flammable solvent

The gutta percha solvent is a petroleum-distillate blend with D-limonene, and the safety data sheet classifies it Danger: flammable liquid and vapour (flash point 40°C), causes skin and serious eye irritation, may cause an allergic skin reaction, may cause drowsiness or dizziness, and may be fatal if swallowed and enters the airways. Wear gloves and eye protection, keep it away from heat and flame, use it in a ventilated area, store it closed and cool, and dispose of it as hazardous waste rather than down a drain. The current safety data sheet is available on request.

Asked before buying

How often do I need it? The chamber is cleaned daily as a minimum, and after each use for best results. One bottle goes a long way – the brushes are the part that wears, and come separately as Cleaning Brushes (2).

Does it fit the older Obtura II? Yes. Obtura Spartan list 822-609 for the Obtura II and the III Max alike.
