Backfill with gutta percha you can actually flow

A downpack leaves you with a canal to fill and a viscosity problem. The Obtura III Max heats gutta percha in the handpiece and delivers it through a bendable applicator needle, so the material arrives warm enough to adapt rather than cool enough to fight. Mains powered, cartridge free, and built round a closed-loop heater that reads its own temperature several hundred times a second.

What the unit does

Obtura Spartan describe the III Max as the instrument that heats gutta percha to its ideal viscosity for backfill, and put over 25 years of clinical performance behind the platform. The engineering underneath it is straightforward: a thermocouple sits inside the heating element, the control unit reads it several hundred times a second and switches the heater to match, and the manual puts the displayed temperature within +/-5°C.

›  Digital set point, in single degrees. Five memory positions, factory set to 140, 150, 170, 180 and 200°C, and they survive a power cut.

›  Cartridge free. One gutta percha stick loads through the top of the handpiece – no cartridge to change mid-procedure.

›  Mains, not battery. Obtura Spartan make the point plainly: no downtime for charging.

›  Enhanced thermal protector. Obtura Spartan state the redesigned protector significantly reduces heat around patient contact surfaces, drawing warm air away from the tip.

›  Interchangeable handpiece. Any III Max handpiece works with any III Max base unit – but it will not retrofit to an Obtura III or earlier.

The things the manual is firm about

›  One stick of gutta percha at a time. The mechanical lengths inside the handpiece are designed for a single piece; more can cause excessive back pressure and damage the seal. Never leave a partial stick in the chamber between procedures.

›  Clean the chamber daily, ideally after each use. Skipping it lets old gutta percha harden in the heater bore. Obtura Spartan note that failure to clean to the manual can void the warranty.

›  The handpiece is not autoclavable. Only the thermal protectors and the Multi-Tool go in the autoclave – 132°C prevacuum, 4 minutes. The base and handpiece are wiped and disinfected instead, and never sprayed directly.

›  A new applicator needle for every patient. Needles are single use, and bend once only, at the largest diameter, using the Multi-Tool.

Asked before buying

Is it battery or mains? Mains, through an external 12V supply with interchangeable plug blades. Obtura Spartan sell the absence of a battery as a feature – nothing to charge, nothing flat at the wrong moment.

How long before I can use it? About three minutes from cold to the 200°C maximum. Lower set points are reached sooner, and the five memory positions mean you are not dialling in from scratch each session.

What does it cost to run? Applicator needles are single use, and gutta percha is consumed a stick at a time. The plunger seal, needle nuts, bushing and thermal protectors are replaceable wear parts – all listed below, and all held here.
