A fine tip with the reach for a long, curved root

Long roots? Thirty-one millimetres is the length for a long canine, a tall premolar or any root where a 25 mm file leaves the rubber stop short of the reference cusp. This is the Small – fine and curved canals – in that length.

Where the Primary will not passively go

Not every canal takes a 0.25 mm tip first pass. A sclerosed mandibular incisor, an MB2 that only just admits a #10, a curve that turns hard apically – in those the Primary stalls, and forcing it is how ledges start. The Small is where the sequence drops to.

It carries the same .07 designation as the Primary on a 0.20 mm tip, so it is a smaller instrument rather than a differently-shaped one. Only the diameter you are asking the dentine to accept changes.

Why a smaller file is not a weaker one

The gold heat treatment matters most here. A fine instrument in a tight curve is where cyclic fatigue does its work, and the post-machining treatment leaves the NiTi with enhanced flexibility and fatigue resistance – enough to be pre-bent like a hand file to negotiate past a ledge.

Reciprocation helps for the same reason: cutting on one stroke and releasing on the next keeps torsional stress from building in a blade with less cross-section to give.

On the taper figure: .07 is the nominal designation at the tip. The taper eases coronally rather than holding .07 up the shaft, and Dentsply publish no average-taper figure for WaveOne® Gold, so none is quoted here.

› Pre-bendable. Gold-treated NiTi can be curved by hand to bypass a ledge.

Questions we get asked

› Do I still need a glide path? Yes. Secure the canal to length with a #10 hand file and confirm patency, then the Gold Glider creates the glide path in the same reciprocating motion. The instructions for use require a secured, patent canal first.

› Do I start with the Small? Only where the anatomy tells you to. Dentsply's sequence starts at the Primary and drops to the Small when it will not passively progress.

› What motor do I need? Any motor carrying the WaveOne setting – X-Smart® Pro+, X-Smart® Go, VDW.SILVER® and VDW.GOLD® RECIPROC®.
