Why reciprocation, and why gold

A rotating file threads itself into the canal; when it binds, the torsional stress has nowhere to go. WaveOne® Gold moves in unequal back-and-forth angles instead – cutting on one stroke, releasing on the next – and its parallelogram cross-section further reduces screwing-in.

Then the gold. A post-machining heat treatment leaves the NiTi with enhanced flexibility and fatigue resistance – which is why this file can be pre-bent like a hand file to negotiate past a ledge.

The size logic, and why Primary leads

Small (020/.07v) for fine canals, Primary (025/.07v) for most, Medium (035/.06v) for wider, Large (045/.05v) for the widest. Start with the Primary. If it will not passively progress, drop to Small; if it reaches length loosely, step up to Medium or Large.

A note on the taper figures. 025/.07v means an ISO 0.25 mm tip with a nominal .07 taper that eases coronally – it does not hold .07 up the shaft, and it is not widest at the tip. Dentsply publish no average-taper figure for WaveOne® Gold, so none is quoted here. The effect is apical shape without taking the coronal dentine a fixed-taper instrument of the same tip size would remove.

Questions we get asked

› Do I still need a glide path? Yes. Secure the canal to length with a #10 hand file and confirm patency, then the Glider creates the glide path mechanically in the same motion as the Primary that follows. The instructions for use are explicit that a secured, patent canal comes first.

› What motor do I need? Any reciprocating motor carrying the WaveOne setting – X-Smart® Pro+, X-Smart® Go, VDW.SILVER® and VDW.GOLD® RECIPROC®. One setting covers the Glider and every file size.

› Will standard gutta-percha cones fit? Poorly – a fixed-taper cone does not follow a variable-taper preparation. Conform Fit® cones are manufactured to match these shapes (Dentsply Sirona), for cold and warm techniques alike.
