Short roots, limited opening? Twenty-one millimetres suits a second molar, a patient who cannot open far, or a root that does not need the reach – and it buys handpiece clearance where a 25 mm file fights the opposing arch. This is the Primary – most canals – in that length.

The Primary is the default, and the reason the system is sold as one-file endodontics: on Dentsply Sirona's data, 80% of cases are completed with a single shaping file. Start here, and only move if the canal tells you to.

A 0.25 mm tip on a .07 variable taper is the geometry that suits the largest share of canals – enough apical shape to irrigate and obturate properly, without the coronal dentine a fixed-taper instrument of the same tip size would take.

Why reciprocation, and why gold

A rotating file threads itself into the canal; when it binds, torsional stress has nowhere to go. WaveOne® Gold moves in unequal back-and-forth angles instead, cutting on one stroke and releasing on the next, and the parallelogram cross-section further reduces screwing-in.

The gold is a post-machining heat treatment that leaves the NiTi with enhanced flexibility and fatigue resistance. Dentsply cite clinical data of zero fractures across 1,104 instruments in 2,691 root canals.

On the taper figure: .07 is the nominal designation at the tip. The taper eases coronally rather than holding .07 up the shaft, and Dentsply publish no average-taper figure for WaveOne® Gold, so none is quoted here.

Questions we get asked

› Do I still need a glide path? Yes. Secure the canal to length with a #10 hand file and confirm patency, then the Gold Glider creates the glide path in the same reciprocating motion. The instructions for use require a secured, patent canal first.

› Which size do I choose? Start with the Primary. It will not progress? Small. Loose at length? Medium, then Large.

› What motor do I need? Any motor carrying the WaveOne setting – X-Smart® Pro+, X-Smart® Go, VDW.SILVER® and VDW.GOLD® RECIPROC®.
