Long tooth, wide canal, open apex – or a retreatment where the coronal dentine is already spent? R45 in 31 mm gives a 0.45 mm apical preparation on a .05 apical taper, averaging just 2.0% along the blade. Over a canal this long, that difference in body diameter is the most dentine any file in the range will save you.
