It looks like a hygiene item. It is actually the part that switches the apex locator on. Combined length determination – reading the canal while the file is cutting, which is the whole argument for a motor with the locator built in – is described in one instruction: “put the Protective Silicone Sleeve on the contra-angle (after it has been sterilised), connect the measuring cable to the handpiece and attach the lip clip”. No sleeve, no combined reading.

Where it sits in the reprocessing round

›  The sleeve is an applied part in Dentsply Sirona's own definition, along with the head it covers and the measuring cable with its clips – so it is reprocessed before first use and between every patient.
›  It goes through the same route as the head: pre-disinfect, brush or washer-disinfector, pouch, autoclave. Keep the two apart in the holder so they do not touch.
›  Two per pack matches what ships in the box – one on the head, one coming clean – which is the minimum for running consecutive cases.
›  Silicone tears and perishes long before 200 cycles are up in most surgeries. Cracks, deformation and loss of colour are the instructions' own signals to retire it.

Questions we get asked

Is this the same as the disposable handpiece sleeve?
No, and it is the confusion worth clearing up. This one is silicone, goes over the contra-angle, is sterilisable and enables the apex locator. The handpiece sleeve is a disposable barrier over the motor body, thrown away after each patient. Most surgeries need both.

Can I measure without it if I use a hand file?
Yes. Separate length determination runs off the file clip and lip clip with the motor idle. It is only the reading-while-shaping mode that needs the sleeve.
