The handpiece cannot be autoclaved, so the sleeve does that job

A cordless motor is a piece of electronics you hold in a wet field. Dentsply Sirona are clear about what that means: the handpiece, the power bank, the measurement cable and the charger cannot be sterilized – they are wipe-disinfected between patients. The disposable sleeve is what stands between the motor body and the case, replaced for every patient, and the motor ships with ten of them. This box holds five hundred.

How it fits into the round

›  Fit it, then look at it. The instructions ask you to check after placement that the sleeve is not torn – a split one is worse than none, because it lets contamination in and hides it.
›  Remove and discard after use, then wipe the handpiece underneath with an approved aldehyde-free disinfectant. The sleeve does not replace the wipe; it shortens it.
›  Let the handpiece dry thoroughly before the next sleeve goes on – also the instructions' own wording.
›  Ten sleeves in the box is a fortnight at best. This is the consumable that runs out first on a new motor, and the one nobody orders until it has.

Questions we get asked

Is this the sleeve that goes on the contra-angle?
No. That one is the sterilizable silicone contra-angle sleeve, and it also switches on apex location while shaping. This is the disposable barrier over the motor body. Different part, different job, and most surgeries need both.

Could I use a generic barrier sleeve?
The instructions ask for the manufacturer's original accessories, and a sleeve that does not fit the triangular handpiece properly is a sleeve that tears. At this price per patient it is not the place to improvise.
