A head in the autoclave is a head you cannot use

Lubricate, pouch, sterilise, dry – the instructions ask for all of it after every single case. That is the maths behind a second contra-angle: with one head, a back-to-back endodontic list waits on the autoclave. This is the original 6:1 head for the X-Smart® Go, the only one Dentsply Sirona permit on the motor, and the one the apex locator reads through.

What the head asks of you between cases

›  Lubrication is not optional. Dentsply Sirona put it plainly: lubricating the contra-angle is mandatory after each use and before sterilisation, through the F-type spray nozzle.
›  Then recalibrate. “Always calibrate the motor handpiece after the contra-angle has been sterilised, lubricated, or exchanged” – it takes seconds and it is what keeps the torque on screen and the torque at the file the same number.
›  Brush the awkward parts. The reprocessing table asks for manual brushing with a soft nylon, polypropylene or acrylic brush, particularly at the push-button, the chuck and the joints.
›  A washer-disinfector is allowed for the head and its sleeve – the worked example is 65°C for 5 minutes cleaning and 90°C for 5 minutes disinfection, Ao value above 3,000, to ISO 15883. Lubricate immediately afterwards.
›  Never press the push-button while the motor is running or coming to a stop – the instructions warn it will throw the file or overheat the button.

Questions we get asked

Will a contra-angle from another motor fit?
No – the instructions say to use only the original contra-angle, and the head is part of how the motor calculates torque and how the apex locator reads through the file. This is that head.

Do I need the silicone sleeve as well?
If you want length readings while you shape, yes. Combined length determination only works with the protective silicone sleeve fitted over the head after sterilisation. Two sleeves ship with the motor and they sterilise alongside it.

Why is the warranty shorter than the motor's?
Dentsply Sirona warrant the handpiece and power bank for 24 months, the contra-angle for 12 and the accessories for 6. A head is a geared mechanism doing the work; the tiering is the manufacturer's own and it is worth knowing before you plan replacement.
