A jaw you can wire an apex locator to – VDW's bench model for shaping and length practice

A loose training tooth teaches the file. It does not teach the reading. VDW's Castillo model is a plastic upper jaw, 11 to 17, with a four-canal training tooth at 16, a training block at 17, a fixture for electronic length determination and a Minifix gauge in the base – VDW's words: "training model for root canal preparation and electronic length determination". Tooth and block are replaceable, so one model serves a course, not a session.

This pack: VDW Endo Training Model Castillo, plastic upper jaw 11–17 with Endo Training Tooth (position 16), Plastic Training Block (position 17), fixture for electronic length determination and integrated Minifix Measuring Gauge (1 model)

ModelPlastic upper jaw, teeth 11–17
Position 16VDW Endo Training Tooth – four root canals, three colour-stained, the MB2 left unstained; pulp chamber already accessed (VDW)
Position 17Plastic training block
Length determinationFixture for electronic length determination – the model is made to be used with an apex locator
GaugeIntegrated Minifix Measuring Gauge – VDW: "for precise adjustment of the working length of endo instruments, gutta-percha and paper points"

What it gives you that a loose tooth does not

›  An apex locator reading on the bench. The fixture is what makes this a length-determination trainer as well as a shaping one – the locator has something to connect to, which a tooth held in the fingers never offers.

›  Access like a mouth. The tooth sits in a jaw at 16, so file, handpiece and mirror meet it as they would a patient's. Three of its four canals are stained to be found; the MB2 is not, on purpose.

›  A gauge where the file is. The Minifix gauge is set into the base, so working length is set without reaching for a ruler.

›  Training model, not for use on patients. VDW's how-to video is on this page.

Which apex locator does it take?

VDW describe the fixture only as being for electronic length determination and name no unit. We stock the Root ZX3 and Root ZX mini as stand-alone locators, and the X-Smart Pro+ with the locator built into the motor. Buying for a course? Tell us which unit the delegates will use and we can advise on clips and cords.

How many teeth do I need?

One per delegate per full preparation – a shaped and filled tooth is finished. The model ships with one tooth and one block fitted; VDW list both as reorderable, and the tooth is the VDW Training Tooth #3 Molar UR6 we stock in fives. A study club of six: one pack plus the tooth in the model.
