The solvent lasts. The brush does not

The brush is what actually carries the solvent into the seal and down the shaft. Obtura Spartan name a worn one as a symptom in its own right – “the cleaning brush is ineffective in removing excess gutta percha from the handpiece shaft during normal cleaning” is one of the three things that sends you into extended maintenance. A brush that has stopped clearing the shaft is not saving you money.

›  Used twice in every clean: once on the plunger seal, once inside the handpiece shaft – dipped in solvent, fully coated, worked back and forth until all visible gutta percha is cleared

What a tired brush actually costs

A brush that no longer clears the shaft leaves hardened gutta percha behind, and that build-up is what makes the plunger stiff and drives the seal to fail. Obtura Spartan are blunt at the other end of it: failure to clean the instrument according to the manual may void the warranty. Two brushes are the cheapest thing on this page.

The one rule

›  Never submerge any part of the handpiece in the solvent. The brush goes in the bottle; the handpiece never does. Obtura Spartan set that warning in capitals in both the regular and the extended maintenance procedure.

Asked before buying

Do I need the solvent as well? Yes – the brush works dipped and fully coated. If both have run out, the Obtura Cleaning Kit is one bottle of gutta percha solvent with two brushes in it.

Does it fit the older Obtura II? Yes. Obtura Spartan list 822-613 across the Obtura II and the Obtura III Max alike.
