25G applicator needles for the Obtura III Max

The needle is what gets warm gutta percha to the right depth, and it is single use. Obtura Spartan's applicator needles are soft silver, designed to conduct heat so the tip stays at working temperature, and bendable so you can shape one to the tooth in front of you. 25G is the narrowest of the three, for the tighter canal – expect to need the gutta percha properly up to temperature before it will pass.

Getting the best out of one

›  Express about 3cm of gutta percha before you start, so up-to-temperature material is sitting at the needle tip.

›  Let the fill push the needle out of the canal rather than withdrawing it – Obtura Spartan warn that pulling it out can leave voids.

›  Never bend at a taper, and never bend twice. A kink blocks flow, and repeated bending weakens the needle to the point of breakage.

›  For awkward access, loosen the needle nut, rotate the needle and re-tighten – do not leave the nut loose to swivel during use.

Asked before buying

Which gauge should I stock? The III Max system ships with 23G, which is the usual working choice. Practices doing a wide spread of cases tend to keep a wider gauge for generous canals and a narrower one for tight ones – 20G and 23G are the alternatives to this needle. The narrower the needle, the more the gutta percha has to be properly up to temperature to pass.

Can a needle be sterilised and re-used? No. These are single use. Obtura Spartan are explicit that the needle is changed after each patient, both for correct operation and to prevent cross-infection.
