Trigger stopped working? Check this first

It is the cheapest part on this page and the first thing Obtura Spartan tell you to look at. Their own FAQ answers “the handpiece trigger is not working, how can I fix it?” with: incorrect bushing installation can cause the trigger not to work. Before anything is boxed up and sent away, the bushing is worth five minutes.

›  Fitting: slide it into the opening at the rear of the handpiece and turn clockwise until resistance is felt

›  Alignment: Obtura Spartan say the small indicator line sits at the 12 o'clock position at the back of the handpiece, and that the bushing should be aligned so that bushing rotation ceases

›  Maintenance: cleaned as part of the regular routine, and replaced as needed

Why it wears, and what it takes with it

Obtura Spartan are specific about the failure. The bushing is susceptible to wear caused by misalignment, and that wear transfers to the trigger pawl at the pawl engagement opening. A misaligned bushing does not only fail itself – it wears the mechanism that drives the plunger, which is a considerably more expensive part of the handpiece.

Asked before buying

How do I know it is aligned? Turn it clockwise until you feel resistance, and check the small indicator line is at 12 o'clock at the back of the handpiece. If the trigger still will not work after that, Obtura Spartan ask you to have the unit evaluated rather than persist with it.

Is it a consumable? Obtura Spartan name plunger seals, needles and cleaning accessories as the consumable items. The bushing is not among them – but it is inexpensive enough to keep one on the shelf regardless, given what it protects.
