When 25 mm runs out before the apex does

A long canine, a long-rooted premolar, the occasional distinctly tall tooth. These are not common, which is precisely why they catch a practice out – the glide path stalls short of length and there is no longer instrument in the drawer. The 31 mm Glider is the answer to a problem you meet a few times a year and cannot improvise around.

Length changes, sequence does not

The glide path is still established by hand first. Dentsply's directions for use ask you to scout to at least an ISO 010, confirm patency and verify a smooth reproducible path to a loose 010 – a longer canal simply means more of that work before the Glider is introduced to expand the secured path.

Length also raises the demand on the instrument, since more of the shaft is engaged and any curvature is met further from the handle. The gold heat treatment is what the range offers against that: enhanced flexibility and resistance to cyclic fatigue, in Dentsply's own words – qualitative, because they publish no figure for the Glider.

› Match the shaping file – a 31 mm glide path wants a 31 mm file behind it.
› Check your rubber stops – the extra length is only useful if the reference point is reliable.
› Buy it before you need it – this is the length nobody has on the morning it is wanted.

Questions we get asked

› Which teeth actually need 31 mm? Most often maxillary canines and long-rooted premolars, and the occasional tall incisor. Measure from the radiograph rather than assuming – that is what decides it.

› Is the technique different in a long canal? The sequence is identical. Irrigate and recapitulate as you would anywhere, and be honest about how much of the file is engaged before you push on.
