Retracts the cheek, and stops flaring your scope

Two problems, and most mirrors only answer one. A polished stem throws light back at you the moment the microscope is on it, and a slim stem does nothing useful for a cheek that keeps closing the field. ULTRAretract answers both: a bifurcated stem with a wider, more tapered base that Hahnenkratt describe as optimised cheek retraction, finished in extra-matt DLC so there is nothing left to glare. Ø 24 mm of ULTRA FS coating on the front of it.

Why does a black mirror matter under a microscope?
Coaxial light at high magnification finds every polished surface in the field. A bright stem beside a bright mirror face puts a hotspot in the eyepiece and costs you contrast on the thing you are trying to see. Matting the metal leaves only the reflective face doing any reflecting.

Does the DLC coating go on the mirror face too?
No. The DLC is the finish on the metal – stem, cone and rim. The optical face carries the ULTRA FS coating, the same one used across the ULTRAvision range.

Is it a mirror or a retractor?
Both, and that is the argument for it. The wide split base holds the cheek while the face does the seeing, which is one instrument out of a crowded field rather than two.
