Four jobs, one tool, and it goes through the autoclave

Nothing on the Obtura III Max is meant to be done with fingers or pliers. The Multi-Tool unlatches the thermal protector, turns the needle nut on and off the heater thread, bends the applicator needle, and carries the small hex opening that unscrews the plunger seal assembly. It is the tool every maintenance instruction in the manual assumes you are holding.

›  Thermal protector: unlatched and removed with the Multi-Tool at the start of every clean

›  Needle nut: unscrewed and re-tightened with it, and the nut stays on the tool while the needle is changed. Obtura Spartan say to use it to assure proper fit

›  Bending the needle: “always use the Multi-Tool to bend the needle” – once only, at the largest diameter, as close to the thermal protector as possible

›  Plunger seal: the small hex opening is what the seal assembly unscrews into

It is a reprocessed instrument, not an accessory

Because the Multi-Tool contacts potentially contaminated surfaces, Obtura Spartan require it to be cleaned and sterilised before first use and after every subsequent use – the same requirement as the thermal protectors, and an easy one to miss on something that looks like a spanner.

The published cycle

›  Clean first: wipe off visible soil, wet with tap water, brush with a soft bristle brush until clean, rinse under potable running water for 30 seconds, dry and inspect

›  Then sterilise: in a paper/plastic pouch, prevacuum steam, full cycle 132°C for 4 minutes, in an ANSI AAMI ST55 or ST8 compliant autoclave

›  Drying: 30 minutes on the autoclave drying cycle, never above 137°C, and back to room temperature before use

Asked before buying

One came with my unit – why buy a second? Turnaround. The tool is sterilised between patients, so a single one means the instrument waits on the cycle. Practices running two surgeries off one Obtura tend to buy a second as a matter of course.

Does it fit the older Obtura II? Obtura Spartan list 823-813 as the Obtura III Max Multi-Tool. If you are running an Obtura II, ask us before ordering.
