UltraCal™ XS · 35% calcium hydroxide paste
Interappointment dressingResorptionPulp cappingApexificationPerforations
Apexification? Resorption? A perforation to manage? UltraCal™ XS is Ultradent's aqueous, radiopaque 35% calcium hydroxide paste, delivered straight from a 1.2 ml syringe through a fine sideport cannula. No mixing, no Lentulo, no guessing where the paste went – and at pH 12.5 it does what calcium hydroxide is chosen for in the first place.
| 35% CALCIUM HYDROXIDE | 12.5 pH | 4 SYRINGES |
This pack: 4 × 1.2 ml syringes · tips ordered separately
Made by Ultradent, USA
Calcium hydroxide only works where it actually reaches, and the usual failure is a canal dressed to two-thirds length with a Lentulo and a hopeful radiograph. UltraCal™ XS is built around the delivery: a 1.2 ml syringe, a 29-gauge cannula with the port in its side wall, and a rubber stop you set before the tip goes near the canal. The paste is aqueous, so it flows rather than packs, and radiopaque, so the film tells you honestly how far it went.
| pH 12.5 | Raises dentine pH to strongly alkaline – an environment hostile to remaining microorganisms |
| Aqueous | Ultradent formulate it to be both aqueous and radiopaque – it flows to length rather than needing packing |
| Radiopaque | The fill and its extent are verifiable on the film, not assumed |
| Award winner | Dentaltown Townie Choice Award, Best Canal Treatment Medicaments, 2017 |
› Interappointment dressing – the everyday job, between visits.
› Root resorption, internal or external.
› Pulp capping.
› Apexification – where a barrier has to be encouraged over months.
› Perforations, ahead of a definitive repair with NeoMTA® 2 or MTA Angelus White.
1 Set the stop first. Ultradent specify the rubber stop at 3–4 mm from the apex before the tip enters the canal.
2 Keep the cannula free. Never dispense if the tip is wedged – withdraw, reposition, then express.
3 Fill on withdrawal. Dispense gently while slowly withdrawing, then radiograph to confirm.
Do NOT dispense UltraCal XS paste if the NaviTip 29 ga sideport is wedged or stuck inside the canal. The cannula must be kept free in the canal.

Which tips do I need?
Ultradent recommend the 29 ga NaviTip™ Single Sideport. 21 mm covers most cases, 25 mm for longer roots, 27 mm for deep access, or an assorted box. If you have none yet, the refill-plus-tips bundle is the cheaper way in.
How do I remove it at the next visit?
Ultradent's method is irrigation with their citric acid and a NaviTip™ FX™ brush tip, the acid dissolving the calcium hydroxide while the fibres clean the walls. Sodium hypochlorite with ultrasonic activation is the common alternative. Either way, expect residue – no technique clears a canal completely.
How does it compare with a bioceramic dressing?
Different jobs. UltraCal™ XS reaches pH 12.5 quickly and is refreshed between visits. BIO-C® TEMP generates its alkalinity gradually and Angelus states it can stay for up to 30 days – the choice is peak pH now against duration over weeks.
Is the syringe single use?
No – wipe it with an intermediate-level disinfectant between uses and fit a single-use barrier sleeve. The tips are single use and are discarded.
What else could I dress with?
Opacal comes as a single 3 ml syringe with its own tips – the straightforward choice when you want one syringe on the tray rather than a four-pack. Calcipast adds hydroxyapatite to the formulation and comes in four 2.1 g syringes with applicators. Note that pastes are sold by weight or by volume depending on the maker, so compare per syringe rather than assuming grams and millilitres line up. What UltraCal™ XS gives you over either is the sideport delivery.
