Calcified or obstructed orifices are where an access stalls. No. 3 is the Start-X tip for freeing the canal entrance: Dentsply Sirona call it the canal openings scouter, and describe it as removing calcifications from the pulp chamber or the coronal third of the canal.

› Canal openings scouter – Dentsply Sirona: removes the obstructions that prevent a straight access.
› Reach – calcifications in the pulp chamber or the coronal third of the root canal, in Dentsply Sirona's launch description.
› Dentsply Sirona's directions give it one indication: freeing the canal entrance by removing obstructions.
Dentsply Sirona developed the five Start-X tips with Professor Berutti, Professor Cantatore and Dr Castellucci on a simple principle: one tip, one clinical indication, to facilitate and optimise the preparation of the access cavity.
In Dentsply Sirona's words: “higher control and precision with ultrasonic inserts specifically designed for access cavity refinement and canal orifice location.”
› Micro-milled active part – in Dentsply Sirona's words, minimising the risk of diamond grit loss in the patient's mouth.
› Resistance to fracture – Dentsply Sirona describe it as excellent.
› EMS thread – M3 x 0.5 mm. Need the other fitting? This tip is also made with an Satelec thread.

› Secure the tip to the handpiece with the key before use.
› Start at a lower power setting and only increase it if necessary to safely accomplish the task. Dentsply Sirona give No. 3 a range of 4–7 on a EMS miniPiezon, adjusted to the clinical application; check your unit's own instructions too.
› Irrigation is recommended for procedures that need high power, to avoid overheating.
› A visual aid is recommended, for comfort and safety. Never run the generator with a damaged tip.
› Contraindications: none known when used as recommended, but Dentsply Sirona recommend not using the tips in patients with a pacemaker.
Is No. 3 the same as No. 2?
No. No. 2 is designed for one job, finding the MB2 canal in upper molars. No. 3 is for freeing any canal entrance that is calcified or obstructed.
Will it fit my ultrasonic unit?
