Eucalyptol is Cerkamed's gutta-percha solvent: 100% eucalyptus oil in a 10 ml bottle with three pipettes. Their intended use is exact: "for use during repeated endodontic treatments to remove gutta-percha from the root canal". A drop or two in the canal, remove what softens, repeat until it is out.

What it is for

›  Cerkamed's five steps: "Using the pipette, insert 1-2 drops of liquid into the root canal. Remove gutta-percha. Use another dose of preparation if necessary. If gutta-percha is still dry or crumbly, apply EUCALYPTOL again. Repeat long as needed."

›  Cerkamed: "Dip the attached pipette in ethanol and allow to dry before the procedure." The bottle is reusable; the pipette is not.

›  Cerkamed's caution for the class: "Gutta-percha dissolving oils can reduce dentin microhardness and adversely affect the interaction of dentin with tooth restoration materials." Irrigate well once the old filling is out.

›  Cerkamed: "It can cause allergic skin reaction." Flammable liquid and vapour. Cofferdam, gloves, goggles.

›  Cerkamed mark the product "TO BE USED BY DENTIST ONLY".

Eucalyptol or Orange Guttane?

Both are Cerkamed's, both 100% natural oils, both directed the same way – drops by pipette, remove, repeat. Cerkamed publish no head-to-head between them, so choose on scent and preference. Orange Guttane is the orange oil.

Does it dissolve the cone or soften it?

Cerkamed's directions describe softening in stages: apply, remove what comes, re-apply if what is left is "dry or crumbly". Expect to work it out with files rather than wash it out.
