The clip that turns a hand file into a measuring instrument

Scouting a canal you cannot see, before the motor goes anywhere near it. That is separate length determination, and it needs two things the motor cannot supply on its own: a lip clip on the patient and this clip on the shaft of the hand file. It is also the part the instructions name first when a reading will not settle – a soiled file clip is the listed cause, and a file clip that fails the connection test is the listed replacement.

Getting a clean reading from it

›  Where it goes matters. The instructions say to place the file clip on the metal part of the file, below the plastic handle – clipping the handle is the commonest reason a circuit reads open.
›  Clean it, not just the canal. Where the scale is unsteady, “the file clip is soiled” is the first cause Dentsply Sirona list, and the remedy is a single-use wipe.
›  Work the jaws during cleaning. The reprocessing table asks for the clip to be activated – pressed and released several times – while it is being cleaned, so debris does not sit in the hinge.
›  Two hundred cycles is the ceiling, not a target. Cracks, deformation, corrosion or loss of colour retire a clip early, whatever the count.

Questions we get asked

How do I know it is the clip and not the lead?
Touch the metal part of the file clip to the lip clip with the motor on. If the cable connection test icon appears, both are conducting. If it does not, Dentsply Sirona say the file clip or the measurement cable should be replaced – swap the clip first, it is the cheaper half.

Do I need it if I measure while shaping?
No – combined length determination runs off the sleeved contra-angle and the lip clip alone. Most surgeries still keep file clips because scouting with a hand file before the motor is a separate job.
