The step before the shape, in the same motion

Single-file shaping does not mean a single instrument. WaveOne® Gold shapes most canals with one file – after a glide path has been secured and then expanded. The Glider is that second step: 015 tip, .02 variable taper, and the same reciprocating setting as the shaping file that follows, so nothing on the motor changes mid-case.

What the instructions for use actually say

There is a persistent idea that reciprocating systems remove the glide path step. They do not, and Dentsply do not say they do. Their own directions for use put a hand-file glide path before the Glider, and the Glider before the shaping file.

“Before using a WaveOne® Gold Glider file, scout the canal with hand files, to at least an ISO K-file size 010… confirm patency and verify a smooth reproducible glide path up to a loose size 010 hand file.”

Dentsply describe the Glider's job precisely: it is there to expand the secured glide path in preparation for the reciprocating WaveOne® Gold files. Read that sentence twice and the sequence is settled – scout by hand, expand mechanically, then shape.

What a laboratory model showed

Pillay, Vorster and van der Vyver (SADJ 2021) prepared simulated canals in resin blocks and counted how many a file completed before fracture. Primary WaveOne® Gold used with no glide path managed a mean of 4.60 canals; with the Gold Glider first, 15.00. Preparation time fell too, from 22.45 s to 17.60 s. This is an in vitro model with a small sample, not a clinical outcome, and the same authors also tested a continuous-rotation system that recorded higher figures than WaveOne® Gold in both arms. Take from it the one thing it shows cleanly: within this system, the glide path is not a formality.

Questions we get asked

› Can the Glider create the glide path from scratch? No. Dentsply's wording is that it expands a secured glide path. The hand-file work comes first, and patency is confirmed before the Glider goes near the canal.

› Will it run in rotary mode? No – it is for reciprocating use only, on a motor carrying the WaveOne setting. That is also the convenience: one setting from glide path to final shape.

› Which length do I stock? 25 mm covers most cases. Keep 21 mm for short roots and tight interocclusal space, 31 mm for long canals.

› Is one Glider enough for a molar? It is a single-patient instrument, so the pack of three is roughly a case with three canals – check it between canals as you would any file, and discard after the patient.
