HyFlex CM 20/.04 – Controlled Memory NiTi for apical enlargement to working length

HyFlex CM is where Coltene’s Controlled Memory nickel-titanium started; the later HyFlex EDM files carry the same heat treatment. In Coltene’s HyFlex CM sequence the 20/.04 is step 2: apical enlargement up to working length, straight after the orifice opener.

What this file does

›  In the instructions. Step 2: “Use the 20/.04 file for apical enlargement up to the working length.”
›  Tapping, never pressure. “Proceed forward slowly using tapping movements and without applying pressure.”
›  Patency at resistance. “As soon as resistance is felt, check patency using a hand file.” Canal irrigated and lubricated throughout.

Coltene say the CM files suit more than one way of working: “The HyFlex CM files may be used with the crowndown and stepback techniques or using the recommended hybrid and single length techniques”.

Questions we get asked

Which motor settings?
Coltene: “All HyFlex CM files can be used in continuous rotation at 500 rpm and at a torque of up to 2.5 Ncm (25 mNm).” On a low-speed contra-angle, in a custom programme on any of the three motors we stock: X-Smart® Go · X-Smart® Pro+ · VDW.SILVER® RECIPROC®.

HyFlex CM or HyFlex EDM?
Same Controlled Memory heat treatment, different manufacture: the EDM files are cut by electric discharge machining, and run at 400 rpm. See the HyFlex EDM OGSF Sequence Set.

Anything to check before use?
Coltene’s instructions: HyFlex CM files “contain Nickel and Titanium and should not be used on patient with known allergic sensitivity to these metals.” Check the file is correctly fixed in the contra-angle before use.
