Glidepath File 10/.05 – the glide path to working length on the classic HyFlex EDM route

On the classic HyFlex EDM route the glide path comes first, and this is the file Coltene name for it. The 10/.05 Glidepath File goes to working length before the OneFile. Like every glide path file in the range it runs slower than the shaping files: 300 rpm and up to 1.8 Ncm.

What this file does

›  In the instructions. Step 2: “Use the 10/.05 Glidepath File up to the working length to create a glidepath.”
›  Handle it gently. Coltene’s own caution: “This file is extremely thin and therefore not as breakage resistant as the other HyFlex EDM files.” They ask for it to be used very carefully.
›  Patency at resistance. “As soon as resistance is felt, check patency using a hand file.”

Where it sits on the classic HyFlex EDM route

1  Optional coronal access. At your discretion, an orifice opener in the straight part of the canal.

2  Glide path. Glidepath File 10/.05 to working length, at 300 rpm.

3  Shape. OneFile 25/~ to working length. Coltene’s card adds the 20/.05 Preparation File before it where needed.

4  Optional finishing. 40/.04, 50/.03, 60/.02 to enlarge the apical section.

How every HyFlex EDM file is used

Coltene give one handling rule for every file in the range: “Place the file in the canal without running engine. When the file cannot proceed any further move it back 1mm until it is free of the walls. Then start the engine and proceed forward slowly using tapping movements and without applying pressure.” Irrigate the canal frequently, keep it lubricated, and clean the spirals every time the file comes out.

Questions we get asked

10/.05 or 15/.03?
Coltene’s card shows the 10/.05 on all three classic routes; the third route on the card starts with the 15/.03 and follows it with this file. The OGSF sequence uses the 15/.03 alone.

Which motor settings?
This is a glide path file, so Coltene set 300 rpm and up to 1.8 Ncm – lower than the 400 rpm and 2.5 Ncm of the shaping and finishing files. Continuous rotation, low-speed contra-angle. Set it in a custom programme on any of the three endo motors we stock: X-Smart® Go · X-Smart® Pro+ · VDW.SILVER® RECIPROC®.

Can I pre-bend them?
Coltene say so: “Like stainless steel files, the HyFlex EDM files can be pre-bent.” They put it down to the Controlled Memory heat treatment of the nickel-titanium.

Anything to check before use?
Coltene’s instructions carry one patient caution: HyFlex EDM files “contain Nickel and Titanium and should not be used on patient with known allergic sensitivity to these metals.” And before each use, a manual check that the file is correctly fixed in the contra-angle.
