Finishing File 60/.02 – enlarge apically without taking the coronal dentine with it

A large apex does not have to mean a large access. The 60/.02 is the largest HyFlex EDM finishing file: an ISO 60 tip on a .02 taper. In a published case report, Dr Sam Alborz opened coronally with an orifice opener and then prepared the rest of an upper central incisor with this one file.

What this file does

›  Optional, at your discretion. Coltene’s instructions: “Depending on the clinical situation and on the discretion of the dentist the use of the 40/.04, 50/.03 and 60/.02 Finisher file to enlarge the apical section can be necessary.”
›  After the shaping file. On the OGSF route that follows the 30/.04 Finisher; on the classic route, the 25/~ OneFile.
›  Step back at resistance. “Return to the previous step as soon as resistance is felt.” Patency with a hand file, canal irrigated and lubricated.

Where it sits on the classic HyFlex EDM route

1  Optional coronal access. At your discretion, an orifice opener in the straight part of the canal.

2  Glide path. Glidepath File 10/.05 to working length, at 300 rpm.

3  Shape. OneFile 25/~ to working length. Coltene’s card adds the 20/.05 Preparation File before it where needed.

4  Optional finishing. 40/.04, 50/.03, 60/.02 to enlarge the apical section.

How every HyFlex EDM file is used

Coltene give one handling rule for every file in the range: “Place the file in the canal without running engine. When the file cannot proceed any further move it back 1mm until it is free of the walls. Then start the engine and proceed forward slowly using tapping movements and without applying pressure.” Irrigate the canal frequently, keep it lubricated, and clean the spirals every time the file comes out.

Questions we get asked

What did the case report show?
Coltene’s summary of Dr Alborz’s case (Roots International 2016): an upper right central incisor with a necrotic pulp and acute abscess, where the challenge was “Apical enlargement of the root canal without sacrificing coronal tooth structure.” One clinician’s case, not a study.

Which motor settings?
Coltene set 400 rpm and up to 2.5 Ncm for the HyFlex EDM files (the 2025 instructions allow 400–500 rpm on the classic files), and 300 rpm and up to 1.8 Ncm for the glide path files, in continuous rotation on a low-speed contra-angle. Set it in a custom programme on any of the three endo motors we stock: X-Smart® Go · X-Smart® Pro+ · VDW.SILVER® RECIPROC®.

Can I pre-bend them?
Coltene say so: “Like stainless steel files, the HyFlex EDM files can be pre-bent.” They put it down to the Controlled Memory heat treatment of the nickel-titanium.

Anything to check before use?
Coltene’s instructions carry one patient caution: HyFlex EDM files “contain Nickel and Titanium and should not be used on patient with known allergic sensitivity to these metals.” And before each use, a manual check that the file is correctly fixed in the contra-angle.
