Preparation File 20/.05 – the shaping step between the glide path and the OneFile

Coltene’s sequence card shows three classic HyFlex EDM routes, and the 20/.05 is on two of them. After the 10/.05 Glidepath File it prepares the canal before the OneFile; on the route that starts with the 15/.03, it is the last shaping file. Matched 20/.05 paper points and gutta percha finish that route.

Sizes as Coltene print them: tip diameter / taper. Motor settings from Coltene’s HyFlex EDM instructions for use (REV-06-2025).

What this file does

›  Route two. 10/.05 Glidepath File, then this file, then the 25/~ OneFile, with optional finishing files after.
›  Route three. 15/.03 and 10/.05 glide path files, then this file to finish the shaping.
›  The same handling. Engine off to insert, back 1 mm, engine on, tapping without pressure; step back at resistance and check patency with a hand file.

Where it sits on the classic HyFlex EDM route

1  Optional coronal access. At your discretion, an orifice opener in the straight part of the canal.

2  Glide path. Glidepath File 10/.05 to working length, at 300 rpm.

3  Shape. OneFile 25/~ to working length. Coltene’s card adds the 20/.05 Preparation File before it where needed.

4  Optional finishing. 40/.04, 50/.03, 60/.02 to enlarge the apical section.

How every HyFlex EDM file is used

Coltene give one handling rule for every file in the range: “Place the file in the canal without running engine. When the file cannot proceed any further move it back 1mm until it is free of the walls. Then start the engine and proceed forward slowly using tapping movements and without applying pressure.” Irrigate the canal frequently, keep it lubricated, and clean the spirals every time the file comes out.

Questions we get asked

Is it in the instructions for use?
The IFU sets out the core route – glide path, OneFile, finishers. The 20/.05 comes from Coltene’s sequence card and brochure, which show where it fits; its speed and handling follow the IFU’s rules for shaping files.

Which motor settings?
Coltene set 400 rpm and up to 2.5 Ncm for the HyFlex EDM files (the 2025 instructions allow 400–500 rpm on the classic files), and 300 rpm and up to 1.8 Ncm for the glide path files, in continuous rotation on a low-speed contra-angle. Set it in a custom programme on any of the three endo motors we stock: X-Smart® Go · X-Smart® Pro+ · VDW.SILVER® RECIPROC®.

Can I pre-bend them?
Coltene say so: “Like stainless steel files, the HyFlex EDM files can be pre-bent.” They put it down to the Controlled Memory heat treatment of the nickel-titanium.

Anything to check before use?
Coltene’s instructions carry one patient caution: HyFlex EDM files “contain Nickel and Titanium and should not be used on patient with known allergic sensitivity to these metals.” And before each use, a manual check that the file is correctly fixed in the contra-angle.
