Sonic activationLateral canals and isthmusesCordless, 91 g360° rotatable head

Your file never touches a third of the canal. Only the irrigant gets there.

Peters, Schonenberger and Laib measured it in 2001 and the number has not moved since: around 35% or more of the canal wall is left untouched after mechanical instrumentation – fins, isthmuses, lateral canals, the flat side of an oval canal. No file reaches them. Irrigant does, if you make it move. This kit is Dentsply Sirona's sonic answer, and it is the whole system in one box: handpiece, attachment, charging base and a working stock of tips and sleeves.

What sonic activation is actually doing in there

The attachment drives a polymer tip in an elliptical path rather than the straight line of the original EndoActivator, at two sonic speeds – Dentsply Sirona give them as 18,000 cycles per minute on the first button press and 3,000 cpm on the second. The tip is not there to cut. It is there to move fluid into the parts of the canal system a file cannot enter.

“Evidence-based endodontics has shown that cavitation and acoustic streaming improve debridement and the disruption of the smear layer and biofilm. Activated fluids promote deep cleaning and disinfection into lateral canals, fins, webs and anastomoses.”

SmartLite Pro EndoActivator Instructions for Use, section 1, Product Description

Dentsply's own bench data – and what kind of data it is

In extracted teeth carrying a 21-day E. faecalis biofilm, Dentsply Sirona measured bacteria reduction more than 150 times higher than manually activated irrigation with a needle for one minute in 2% hypochlorite, and more than 25 times higher than a five-minute soak.

Read that as what it is. Their Fact File lists it as data on file – a Franklin R. Tay laboratory study, not a published paper and not a clinical outcome. We are repeating it as Dentsply's figure, with their comparator named, because a bare “150 times” tells you nothing without knowing what it was measured against. The same document's smear-layer arm used 90 seconds of activation in 17% EDTA and reported canals visibly cleaner on SEM than any of the passive protocols tested.

Three tips, and the 2 mm rule that governs all of them

Small15/.02, 22 mm, 0.15 mm tip · yellow
Medium25/.04, 22 mm, 0.25 mm tip · red
Medium Long25/.04, 28 mm, 0.25 mm tip · red · the long-tooth option

Select the tip that fits loosely within 2 mm of working length, and operate it no closer than 2 mm to working length or apex – that is the instruction, and the depth rings exist so you can see it rather than estimate it. The tip is chosen by fit, not by which file cut the canal. The instructions also say plainly: avoid use when the apex is incomplete or open, and avoid use without irrigation solution.

The manufacturer's sequence, as printed

We are a distributor, not a clinical authority, so this is Dentsply Sirona's Technique Guide rather than our protocol – abbreviated, not rewritten.

1 Fully prepare the canal, then fill the pulp chamber with hypochlorite, EDTA or other rinse solution.

2 Sleeve the assembled handpiece and attachment – but not tightly over the attachment head, which stalls the motor. Check the tip runs outside the mouth before it goes in.

3 Place the tip freely in the coronal third first, then activate. Starting deep is what stalls it.

4 Pump in short 2–3 mm vertical strokes and hydrodynamically agitate for 30–60 seconds. It beeps at the start and every 30 seconds, so you are not counting.

5 Switch off before withdrawing – taking an oscillating tip out of the canal splashes. Then irrigate and use intracanal suction to clear loose debris.

The step almost everyone misses: the tips need disinfecting before use

Straight from the box is not ready to use. The instructions ask you to immerse the activator tips in 5.25% sodium hypochlorite for one minute, wipe them with sterile gauze moistened in 70% isopropyl alcohol, and air dry them completely. Cleaning is not needed first – disinfection is.

› Do not autoclave the tips before use. The document is explicit that autoclaving may increase the risk of tip fracture, and steam sterilisation is not a validated method for them at all.
› The handpiece, attachment and charging base are not autoclavable either – intermediate-level disinfection with an alcohol-based quaternary ammonium wipe, never immersion, and never bleach on the contacts.
› Tips and barrier sleeves are single-patient use. The sleeve does not replace reprocessing.

Already own a SmartLite Pro? Then you need the module, not the kit – and the Refill Kit at £398.78 is the Attachment at £354.37 plus 100 sleeves and 75 tips, which come to £162.09 bought separately.

Resin or bioceramic is a real choice of technique rather than a ranking – we carry both because both are right in different hands.

Questions we get asked

Will it fit my existing SmartLite Pro curing light?
Yes – the attachment is a module for that handpiece, which is the point of the modular design. If you already have one, buy the Refill Kit instead of this one.

How long does a set of tips last?
Tips are single-patient use, so a 25-pack is 25 patients however many canals each has – the tip is chosen per tooth, not per canal. Sleeves come 100 to a box for the same reason.

Any contraindications, or a concentration limit?
None known, in Dentsply Sirona's own words, and the instructions name hypochlorite and EDTA as compatible without setting a ceiling on either – concentration stays your clinical decision. The cautions that apply are practical: keep the tip 2 mm short, avoid an incomplete or open apex, never run it dry.
