GuttaCore is a carrier obturator whose carrier is itself gutta percha, crosslinked so it keeps its form while the warm gutta percha around it flows. Heat it, take it to length in one movement, and remove the handle at the orifice. Size 30 is Dentsply Sirona’s match for a canal finished to 30/.06 or 35/.04.

“Its crosslinked gutta-percha core centrally compacts the gutta-percha with a hydraulic force that sends it flowing equally in three dimensions.”
Dentsply Sirona, GuttaCore® brochure
› One insertion. Dentsply Sirona describe it as “an efficient technique that offers the ease of a single insertion” – cold-cone convenience with a warm fill, in their words.
› Sized by the table, confirmed by the verifier. You choose the obturator from the shape you finished, then prove it with the GuttaCore size verifier before anything is heated.
› Post space and retreatment are set out. The directions cover post space with a post space instrument or Peeso reamer, and removal with rotary files, or a hand file with solvent to soften the gutta percha.
Dentsply Sirona cite Li et al., Journal of Dentistry 2014, an in vitro study of 30 single-rooted premolars with oval canals, ten per technique. On micro-CT and SEM, GuttaCore had the lowest incidence of gaps and voids; its difference from warm vertical compaction was not statistically significant, and both did significantly better than cold lateral compaction. The authors conclude that obturation quality with GuttaCore “is not significantly different from that achieved by warm vertical compaction”. A laboratory result, and a fair one.
Size by the shape you finished, not by habit. Dentsply Sirona’s table puts GuttaCore 30 in a 30/.06 or a 35/.04 preparation. Finished to 30/.04 instead? Then the table takes you one size down, to GuttaCore 25. For a 35/.06 shape it is GuttaCore 35.
Confirm it before you heat anything: the GuttaCore size verifier should reach working length and fit passively. Dentsply Sirona are specific that the obturator itself and hand files are not to be used as verifiers.
1Shape and flare. Finish the canal to your file system’s own directions and flare it coronally so the obturator enters in straight-line access.
2Verify. Take the GuttaCore size verifier to working length; it should fit passively.
3Irrigate and dry. Irrigate, then dry the canal with paper points.
4Set the stopper on the obturator at working length, using the calibration rings.
5Sealer. A very light coat on the canal wall, placed with a paper point.
6Heat in the ThermaPrep® 2 oven. At the oven’s first signal the obturator is ready.
7Place directly into the canal orifice and on to working length, without touching the walls of the access cavity.
8Remove the handle at the orifice, by bending it side to side or with a bur. Then the coronal seal.
One caution worth passing on: do not strip gutta percha from the apical end before placing it – Dentsply Sirona warn that it may damage the obturator.
GuttaCore has to be heated before use, and the oven Dentsply Sirona’s directions name is their ThermaPrep® 2 obturator oven. It is not in our online catalogue – if you need one, ask us.
How is it different from Thermafil?
Both are carrier-based and heated in an oven before placement. The difference is the carrier: in GuttaCore it is crosslinked gutta percha.
Which sealer?
Dentsply Sirona’s directions name AH Plus Jet; AH Plus is the same chemistry in tubes, the epoxy sealer every other one is measured against. NeoSEALER EZFlo is the bioceramic alternative. Resin or bioceramic is a real choice of technique rather than a ranking – we carry both because both are right in different hands.
| Shape | your file system, finished to 30/.06 or 35/.04. |
| Irrigants | Chlorax 5.25%, Chlorax 2% and Endo-Solution 17% EDTA. |
| Activation | SmartLite Pro EndoActivator – Dentsply Sirona’s own. |
| Verify the size | the GuttaCore size verifier. |
| Sealer | AH Plus Jet, AH Plus, NeoSEALER EZFlo or ProRoot Bio Sealer. |
| Heat | ThermaPrep® 2 obturator oven – ask us. |
| Coronal seal | SDR flow+ Refill Universal – 4 mm bulk increment, one cure. |
