RECIPROC® Minima is the slim end of the RECIPROC® family, designed for narrow and challenging canals. R20 is the size Dentsply Sirona tell you to start with – and in a 2026 laboratory study it reached full working length in 96% of narrow mesial canals in lower molars.

Why choose RECIPROC® Minima?

The file that will not negotiate a canal is rarely the one that cannot cut. It is the one that is too stiff and too wide where the anatomy narrows. Minima addresses that directly: a thinner core and a reduced overall taper, so the file reaches the constriction with less metal behind it.

The taper figure is worth reading properly. R20 is not uniformly thin – it keeps a proper 8% apical taper where shaping and irrigant exchange matter, then gives the diameter back through the middle and coronal thirds instead of removing the dentine that holds the tooth together. That is the minimally invasive argument in one specification.

Minima or RECIPROC® blue – which one?

They sit alongside each other rather than competing. Most practices that stock both use blue as the everyday file and reach for Minima when the anatomy argues back.

Technique – as Dentsply Sirona sets it out

1 Review radiographs or CBCT images (if required) to assess the canal anatomy, width and curvature, and estimate length.

2 Prepare an adequate access cavity and place NaOCl or EDTA gel (if the canals are narrow or calcified) in it.

3 Select R20 and set the stopper at 2/3 of the estimated length.

4 Start the motor at the canal orifice. Slow in-and-out pecks, no more than 3 mm, very light pressure – never force the file. After 3 pecks, remove, clean and inspect R20.

5 Irrigate and confirm patency with an ISO 010 or 008 hand instrument, taken 1–2 mm beyond the length reached.

6 Repeat steps 4 and 5 until R20 reaches 2/3 of the canal.

7 Continue to working length, with an integrated apex locator or by determining length with an 010 or 008 hand file; reconfirm electronically with R20.

8 If R20 stops progressing, do not force it. Remove it and create a glide path (e.g. with R-PILOT™), then complete preparation with R20.

9 If required, finish the apical preparation with a larger Minima size chosen for the canal.

10 Always proceed with 3D disinfection protocols.

11 Dry with dedicated absorbent paper points before obturation with dedicated gutta-percha points and sealer.

Use the RECIPROC® ALL setting – the same programme as RECIPROC® and RECIPROC® blue. All three motors we stock carry a RECIPROC® programme: the VDW.SILVER® RECIPROC®, the X-Smart® Pro+ and the X-Smart® Go. If you are unsure whether your own motor has it, ask us before ordering.

What the published study found

In a laboratory study of 330 mesial canals in extracted mandibular molars, files were taken to full working length with no prior scouting and no glide path. R20 reached length in 96.4% of canals, against 83.6% for Minima R25 and 70.9% for RECIPROC® blue R25, with no fractures in any group.

Questions we get asked

Do I still need a glide path?
No initial scouting or glide path in the majority of canals – that is the RECIPROC® concept and the manufacturer's own protocol. The instructions still have you confirm patency with an ISO 010 or 008 hand file between passes, and if the file stops progressing you withdraw it and create a glide path rather than forcing it. "Usually unnecessary" and "never necessary" are different claims.

Which size do I start with?
R20 in narrow and challenging canals – the technique guide says so directly. In wider canals the starting size is your call: R25, R35 (ISO 35/.06v) and R45 (ISO 45/.05v) step the apical size up while the taper steps down.

Which hand file for patency?
An ISO 010 or 008 hand file, as the instructions specify. We stock C-PILOT® 08 and C-PILOT® 10 in 25 mm to match this file.

Which sealer?
Dentsply Sirona's own epoxy sealer, AH Plus®, is the one every other sealer is measured against. For a premixed bioceramic, NeoSEALER® EZFlo comes with 29 ga NaviTip™ cannulas in 25 mm that reach the apical third of a slim preparation. Resin or bioceramic is a choice of technique rather than a ranking – we carry both.

Can I reuse them?
No. They are supplied sterile for single use. Reuse raises the risk of cross-contamination and fracture.
