The whole system in one blister, weighted where the work is

Trying Minima for the first time, or keeping one pack for whatever the day brings? The assorted blister holds all four sizes – two R20, two R25, one R35 and one R45 – and that ratio is not arbitrary. Two thirds of the pack is the small end, which is the manufacturer telling you plainly where these files earn their place: narrow canals, curvature, and the anatomy that makes a routine appointment stop being routine.

What each file in the box is for

Read the ratio, and the design

Run down that table and the engineering logic shows itself: as tip diameter climbs from 0.20 to 0.45 mm, the apical taper steps down from 8% to 5%, and the average along the blade falls from 3.6% to 2.0%. The usual trade-off – a bigger apical size means a wider file all the way up – has been designed out. That is minimally invasive endodontics expressed as a specification: take the apical diameter the case needs, and leave the pericervical dentine that decides how the tooth survives restoration.

For narrow and challenging canals, the procedure should start with instrument size R20.

What the published study found

In a laboratory study of 330 mesial canals in extracted mandibular molars (International Endodontic Journal, 2026), the two sizes this pack is weighted towards were taken to full working length with no prior scouting and no glide path: R20 in 96.4% of canals and R25 in 83.6%, against 70.9% for RECIPROC® blue R25. No instrument fractured in any group. It is ex-vivo work on extracted teeth rather than a clinical trial – but it is peer-reviewed, and it tested precisely the files that make up two thirds of this blister.

Questions we get asked

Is this the right way to start with Minima?
For most practices, yes. You get the sequence the system is designed around without committing to four separate boxes, and you find out which sizes your case mix actually consumes. After that, single-size packs of R20 and R25 are usually what you reorder.

Will six files cover six cases?
Not necessarily – they are single use, and a case may take more than one size. Treat the blister as a system to learn on rather than a case count.

Do I still need a glide path?
Often not, and the study bears that out. But the instructions require one if the file stops progressing, plus a patency check with an ISO 010 or 008 hand instrument. Never force any file down a canal.

Which motor?
