RECIPROC® R50 · 21 mm · 6 files

The wide canal, in a short root

If an ISO 30 hand instrument already travels passively to working length, the canal is large and R25 will not do the work. R50 is the biggest instrument in the range – a 0.50 mm tip on the range's lowest apical taper, 5% over the first 3 mm, so the extra apical size does not come with extra coronal enlargement. In 21 mm for short roots and limited opening.

This pack: 6 × RECIPROC® R50, 21 mm · 0.50 mm tip, 5% taper over the first 3 mm, D16 1.17 mm · radiopaque markings at 18/19/20 mm · sterile blisters, single use
Made by VDW, Munich – genuine RECIPROC®

› Chosen, not stepped up to. The selection test is done before the motor starts: ISO 30 passively to length means R50, and you go straight there.
› Or the last file of three. Where the apical third still wants enlarging after R25 or R40, R50 is where the range ends – above it, a 2% hand file goes to length easily in a canal that already carries a wider taper.
› Same movement, same rules. Slow in-and-out pecks of no more than 3 mm, very light pressure, three at a time, then out to clean the flutes and irrigate.

Is a big single file safe in a curved canal?
The reciprocating angles are set below the point at which the instrument would fail, so binding cannot lock it – VDW's own wording is that the angles minimise the risk of instrument fracture. The one exclusion is an abrupt apical curvature, where the canal should be finished with hand files, and VDW note that this limitation applies to continuous rotary instruments too.

Does it need its own cone?
Yes. Gutta-percha and paper points are made to match each instrument's shape, so an R50 preparation takes an R50 cone. The taper you cut is the taper you fill.
