An upper canine with an open canal is the case this combination exists for. R50 is the largest instrument in the range – a 0.50 mm tip on the lowest apical taper, 5% over the first 3 mm – and 31 mm is the reach. If an ISO 30 hand file already travels passively to working length, this is the file the selection protocol points to.

› Chosen from the canal, not stepped up to. An ISO 30 that reaches length passively means a large canal, and you go straight to R50.
› Where the range ends. Above ISO 50, VDW note that a 2% hand file goes to length very easily in a canal that already carries a wider taper – so three sizes really do cover it.
› Length shows on the film. Five radiopaque markings at 18, 19, 20, 22 and 24 mm.

Which hand file reaches at this length?
C-PILOT® stops at 25 mm. Use VDW K-Files ISO 010 in 31 mm for patency, and ISO 015 if a glide path is needed.

Any canal it should not be used in?
One: an abrupt apical curvature, where the preparation is finished with hand files instead. VDW have printed the sentence that puts it in proportion since 2010 – this limitation also applies to continuous rotary instruments. Severe curvature itself is what the system is built for.
