An R40 preparation is a different shape from an R25 one, and it wants its own cone. A 0.40 mm tip on a 6% apical taper leaves a canal that finishes at ISO 46 a millimetre from the apex – wider apically, and less tapered along the blade. These are VDW's own points for that shape: a greater taper corresponding to the instrument, which is what they say produces an accurate fit.

Should I buy this size on its own?
Only if you use it often. VDW's own assorted box is weighted the way real caseloads are – 40 R25 with ten each of R40 and R50 – and for most practices that box is the better order.

Will an R40 cone fit a blue or Minima preparation?
No. Match the cone to the file that cut the canal – blue and Minima have their own points, made to their own geometry.
