F1 was loose at length, and its flutes came out clean. That is when Dentsply Sirona’s procedure picks up F2 – 25/.08v, gold heat-treated, and 30% more flexible than the ProTaper Gold® F2 in their testing. This is the 21 mm version – the same file on the shortest shaft, for short teeth or where opening is limited.

What this file does

›  8% at the apex. Every Finisher carries an apical taper of at least 7% to keep the ProTaper deep-shape philosophy; F2’s is 8%.
›  Stronger than the file it replaces. Dentsply Sirona’s laboratory testing: Ultimate F2 showed 30% higher flexibility and 30% higher cyclic fatigue resistance than ProTaper Gold® F2.
›  Gold heat-treated. Post-grinding, for negotiating the curve without transportation or unwinding.

Where it sits in Dentsply Sirona’s sequence

1  Only after F1. If F1 is loose at length and its apical flutes are not loaded with debris, select F2 and follow the canal passively to working length (step 11).

2  Inspect the flutes the same way. Loaded with dentine: finished. Loose and clean: go to F3 (step 12).

3  Clean, irrigate, recapitulate. On removing any file, clean and inspect its flutes, irrigate, recapitulate with a size 10 file or the EndoActivator®, then re-irrigate (step 13).

Questions we get asked

Do I have to go through F1 first?
In Dentsply Sirona’s procedure, yes – F1 is taken to length and gauged, and F2 follows only if F1 is loose and clean.

Which cone and point?
The F2 ones. Dentsply Sirona match both to the colour and size of the last instrument used.

Which motor?
400 rpm and 4–5.2 Ncm for every file in the range. Dentsply Sirona list a ProTaper Ultimate® library among the X-Smart® Go’s presets; on the X-Smart® Pro+ it is set as a custom sequence, and on the VDW.SILVER® in a Dr’s Choice slot (VDW manual: up to 4.1 Ncm). All three are linked below.

When do I throw it away?
Dentsply Sirona’s procedure: inspect the flutes on every removal, and if you see unwinding, straightening or stretching, discard it and use a new file.
