Orifice Shaper 3: opening the coronal third first

ProFile Orifice Shapers prepare the coronal section before the .06 and .04 files follow. Dentsply Sirona also list them for removing gutta percha and sealer in retreatment. The O.S. 3 is .06 taper, tip 40.

›  Where it sits. In the brochure’s medium-canal sequence it follows the O.S. 4; in the small-canal sequence it opens the orifice.
›  Safe design, in Dentsply Sirona’s words. A U-shaped flute with radial lands, and a non-cutting tip that “functions as a guide allowing penetration with a minimum pressure”.
›  How it is run. Constant speed between 150 and 350 rpm, a constant in-and-out movement and light apical pressure, never forced – ideally on a motor with both speed and torque control.

Working length is taken with an ISO 010–015 hand file before the apical files go to length; irrigate abundantly and often throughout, as the directions put it. They carry one warning worth passing on: ProFile contains nickel and should not be used where there is a known nickel allergy.

Which files do I need for a whole case?
The brochure sets out a sequence for small, medium and large canals: Orifice Shapers first, then the .06 and .04 files crown-down, then the .04 files at working length. It is in the download below.

How do I tell the tapers apart?
By the rings on the shank: one ring on the .04 files, two on the .06, three on the Orifice Shapers.
