The whole sequence in one blister

Six instruments – SX, S1, S2, F1, F2 and F3 – which is the ProTaper Gold sequence as far as most canals ever need it. The straightforward way to run the system without committing to six separate lines, and the sensible way to try it.

What is in the blister

›  SX 019/.04v – the accessory shaper, 19 mm, for relocating the coronal aspect of the canal.
›  S1 018/.02v and S2 020/.04v – the two shaping files, used with a brushing action on the outstroke.
›  F1 020/.07v, F2 025/.08v and F3 030/.09v – the three finishers, used without brushing, to length.

Six instruments, one blister, sterile. The three finishers cover the sizes the great majority of canals gauge to; F4 and F5 are sold separately for the ones that do not.

The numbers

How Dentsply Sirona sequence it

The sequence is the same regardless of the length, diameter or curvature of the canal – that is Dentsply Sirona’s own wording. SX through F3 is the sequence as the instructions set it out, steps 8 to 18. Shaping files brush on the outstroke; finishing files do not brush at all. Irrigate abundantly and frequently after each instrument.

Motor settings

300 rpm in continuous rotation for every file in the blister. Torque is set per file: 5–6 Ncm for SX and S1, 1.5–2 Ncm for S2 and F1, and 3–4 Ncm for F2 and F3. The shapers take the most torque and S2 and F1 the least, which is the opposite of what most people set.

Before you buy

Dentsply Sirona say this file, like every engine-driven root canal instrument, should not be used in a canal with an abrupt apical curvature, and that pre-curved hand files should be used in the apical region instead. Contraindications: none known.

In the UK, endodontic reamers and files are treated as single use – the Chief Dental Officer’s instruction of 19 April 2007, not a QED policy. So a blister of six is six canals, not six cases.

Two things we get asked

Will it fit my motor?
It needs continuous rotation at 300 rpm with torque control. X-Smart Pro+ is Dentsply Sirona’s own.

Is it sterile?
Yes – supplied sterile in a blister of six, sterilised by radiation. In the UK the file is then single use.
