Where the range ends, and why that is enough

Three sizes sound like too few until you look at what the preparation actually finishes at. R50 is the largest instrument here – a 0.50 mm tip on the lowest apical taper in the range, 5% over the first 3 mm – and it is the answer when an ISO 30 hand file already travels passively to working length. Above it, VDW's own note is that a 2% hand file larger than ISO 50 goes to length very easily in a canal that already carries a wider taper.

› Chosen from the canal. An ISO 30 hand instrument that reaches working length passively means a large canal, and you go straight to R50 rather than stepping through smaller files.
› Or the finish after R25. Where gauging shows the apical third still wants enlarging, R40 and then R50 are the enlargement, and it is the same instrument sequence after a retreatment.
› The taper falls as the tip grows. 8% on the R25, 6% on the R40, 5% here – a bigger apical preparation that does not bring more coronal enlargement with it.

Is a large single file safe in a curved canal?
The reciprocating angles are set below the point at which the instrument would fail, so binding cannot lock it – VDW's own wording is that this minimises the risk of instrument fracture. The exclusion is an abrupt apical curvature, where the canal is finished with hand files; VDW note the limitation applies to continuous rotary instruments as well.

Which cone fits an R50 preparation?
Its own. The R50 gutta-percha carries the greater taper corresponding to this instrument – for single cone, lateral compaction, or as a master cone in warm vertical condensation.
