The other hand, for the other side of the mouth

Why does a retrograde needle come in a left and a right at all? Because the operator does not move but the tooth does. Approaching a resected root from the buccal on one side of the arch puts the tip at the mirror image of the angle it needs on the other, and a handed needle solves that without you contorting to compensate. This is the fine left-hand needle, Ø0.90 mm, for small retro-preparations.

› Buy the pair, replace singly. A full surgical set-up wants both hands in both sizes; a damaged needle only needs its own code reordering.
› Clean it inside fifteen minutes – and a surgical list is exactly the setting where that slips, because the next stage of the operation is more interesting than the needle.
› Keep it out of hydrogen peroxide, and out of hypochlorite above 5% for more than five minutes.

How do I tell them apart on the tray?
By the bend, and by keeping them in the kit's aluminium case rather than loose. Both are yellow, because the colour codes the bore, not the hand.

Yellow or red for surgery?
Yellow where the retro-preparation is small or access is tight; red where the cavity will take a fuller increment. Owning both sizes in both hands is what the Surgical Kit is for.
