For the second molar you can barely get to

When mouth opening is the limiting factor, length is the problem before anatomy is. This is the shortest combination the range offers: a 21 mm instrument on an 11 mm shaft, against the 13 mm or longer shaft most files carry. R25 is the size VDW's own selection protocol lands on most often, and one instrument prepares the canal – with no initial hand filing in the majority of cases.

This pack: 6 × RECIPROC® R25, 21 mm · 0.25 mm tip, 8% taper over the first 3 mm · radiopaque markings at 18/19/20 mm · sterile blisters, single use – one molar per file
Made by VDW, Munich – genuine RECIPROC®

› Short root, short file. Twenty-one millimetres suits short roots and the posterior teeth where access, not anatomy, is what costs you time.
› M-Wire® and an S-shaped core. A non-cutting tip that follows the canal rather than cutting its own path, in an alloy VDW describe as more flexible and more fatigue-resistant than traditional nickel-titanium.
› Three markings, not four. At 18, 19 and 20 mm on this length – radiopaque, so they read on the film as well as at the chairside.

Is R25 the right size?
VDW settle it from the radiograph: a canal partly or completely invisible means narrow, which means R25. If the canal is visible, insert an ISO 30 hand file passively – directly to length with a gentle watch-winding movement and no filing action. If it reaches length, use R50; if not, try an ISO 20, and if that goes passively use R40. In most cases it is R25.

Do I need a glide path?
Not initially, in the majority of canals – that is the concept, and De-Deus and colleagues (International Endodontic Journal, 2013) took the R25 to full working length without one in more than 93% of canals. The directions still have you confirm the canal is free with an ISO 10 hand file between passes, and if the instrument stops advancing you withdraw it and create a glide path rather than forcing it.
