Festooned beaks for a premolar with an exposed root

Recession turns a straightforward premolar into a clamp problem: the widest part of the tooth is now below the gingival margin. The No.1 answers it with festooned beaks – scalloped to follow the cervical contour rather than sit across it – so the clamp finds the root surface instead of skidding up the crown.

Festooned or flat beaks?
Flat beaks contact at four points on a tooth with a normal cervical contour. Festooned beaks are scalloped so they follow a curved or exposed neck – the choice is the tooth, not the preference.

Is this the one for a lower premolar?
The No.2 is the flat-beak lower bicuspid clamp. Reach for the No.1 when the root is exposed.
