MAP System® · Hooked · N°0 · Ø0.90 mm
A root end sitting behind the bone window rather than in it? The hooked needles are PD's other retrograde geometry – where the triple-angle Surgery needles come at the cavity handed, the hook turns back so the tip can address a face the shaft cannot point at. This is the fine one at Ø0.90 mm, for a small retro-preparation in a tight surgical field.
This pack: 1 × Hooked needle N°0 yellow, Ø0.90 mm, with 16 matching plungers
Made by PD Dental, Switzerland
| Approach | Retrograde – PD list the Hooked and the triple-angle Surgery needles together for retrograde procedures |
| Not handed | Unlike the Surgery needles there is no right and left; the hook is symmetrical about the shaft |
| Bore | Ø0.90 mm, the finest of three. Hooked and NiTi are the only families made in all three sizes |
| Reusable | Validated by PD for 50 reprocessing cycles; the plunger inside is single-use |
› A hook holds residue. The fifteen-minute cleaning window is not a suggestion on this geometry – floss it through the moment the plunger is out.
› Not for Biodentine, which the IFU excludes from the yellow and red needles because it clogs them.
› Same syringe as the rest. Adding a retrograde geometry to an existing MAP set-up costs a needle, not a handpiece.
Hooked or Surgery?
PD intend both for retrograde work and publish no rule for choosing between them. In practice the handed triple-angle needles suit a face you can approach from one side; the hook suits one you have to come back at. Surgeons doing this regularly tend to own both.
Which bore for a small root end?
Yellow. A wider needle in a fine retro-preparation obscures the field and places less accurately, which is the opposite of what the instrument is for.
